Why detect groundwater before drilling in Morocco?

With repeated droughts and falling water tables, many farmers in the Souss, Haouz, Tadla, Saïss, Oriental and Draa-Tafilalet regions depend on a well or a borehole. A deep borehole is expensive, and a dry one is money lost.

Satellite groundwater detection lets you study the whole plot before the drilling rig arrives: where water collects, where the rock is fractured, where the terrain and soil let rain soak in.

How BhdBlue finds favourable zones

BhdBlue combines up to 11 criteria used in hydrogeology, computed on a 30 m grid:

  • The 1:1,000,000 geological map of Morocco: rock type and its ability to hold water.
  • Lineaments (faults and fractures) traced from the terrain, which often guide water through hard rock.
  • Elevation and slope from the Copernicus 30 m DEM, and the topographic wetness index.
  • Streams, drainage density and distance to wadis.
  • Dry-season vegetation seen by Sentinel-2 (NDVI) and land cover (ESA WorldCover).
  • 10-year average rainfall (CHIRPS) and soil texture (SoilGrids).

A multi-criteria analysis (AHP) weights each criterion and ranks every cell of your land from very low to very high potential. Many weighting tests (Monte Carlo) then measure how stable the result is.

All of Morocco, from Tangier to Lagouira

Morocco is fully covered, with the geological map on top of global satellite data. Whether your land is on an alluvial plain, a limestone plateau, an Atlas valley or in the southern provinces, the analysis takes the rock type into account: an aquifer in sediments or water in the fractures of hard rock.

What you get

  • A groundwater potential map of your plot.
  • The 3 best drilling spots with GPS coordinates that open in Google Maps.
  • A PDF report in French and Arabic, and a KML file for Google Earth.
  • The reliability of each result, so you know when an on-site survey is advised.

Before drilling, check with the hydraulic basin agency (ABH) of your region: Moroccan water law regulates wells and boreholes.

Method and limits

Each analysis combines satellite-derived indicators (terrain, vegetation, drainage, lineaments), geological and climate datasets, and a multi-criteria GIS analysis (AHP) that estimates groundwater potential. It is neither a field measurement nor a geophysical survey. See the detailed method

  • The 30 m grid is the spatial resolution of the analysis, not a guaranteed accuracy for a drilling spot.
  • BhdBlue does not estimate the depth of the water table, its yield or volume, water salinity, or a probability of drilling success.
  • The flow direction shown is that of surface water, derived from the terrain, not of the aquifer.
  • Before a major borehole, have the spot confirmed by a hydrogeologist or an on-site geophysical survey.
BhdBlue shows where the chances of finding water are highest and lowers the risk of a dry borehole, but it does not guarantee water: only drilling confirms whether water is there, how deep and how much.

Frequently asked questions

Can groundwater be detected by satellite?

Satellites cannot see underground water directly. They measure reliable clues: terrain, fractures, vegetation, rainfall and drainage. Combined with geology, these clues show where groundwater is most likely to be found.

How much does groundwater detection in Morocco cost with BhdBlue?

The first analysis is free. After that you can buy a single report or take a subscription, shown on the Pricing page. It costs far less than a dry borehole.

Does it replace a water diviner or a geophysicist?

BhdBlue relies on measured data and a scientific method, not on intuition. For a large project, confirm the best spot with an on-site geophysical survey (resistivity soundings).

How deep will my borehole be?

BhdBlue shows where conditions are most favourable, not the exact depth of the water table. Nearby boreholes and a local driller give the best idea of the depth.
